FINAL FINAL FINAL VIDEO.

here is our final, yes, i said final, video up on youtube.
we've also got it on blogger, on abbie and issy's profiles, which you can find here and here.

we added a frame before the scene in the field, which was just black, with the words 'one year later' in the right hand bottom corner in a white font. this gives the film a sense of structure.

copyright dilemma!

unfortunately, we have just been told that we can't use the song we were originally using because we havent had permission to use it due to copyright.
myself, issy and abbie have spent most of today putting together a track on garageband on the macs in the cabot eye. it was an extremely tedious and irritating task, but now that it's finished, we feel as though it is much better than before.

we also wrote a script for a voice over, as without the lyrics, it looked quite plain. i was skeptical of it at the time, but it actually looks really good and the words are extremely fitting.

we then went back onto the editing machine to get rid of the strange and beautiful song, we then put the new track onto adobe premiere pro, and played around with the volume and fading it out at the end.

abbie also changed the 4am to the creepy font we had wanted to use before but couldnt get it to get any smaller. she edited the size and now it fits perfectly.

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Our preliminary task is laughable compared to our final project. We have learnt so much about the technology, time and effort, team work, filming and editing.
Our prelim had basic filming and basic editing which made it quite dull to watch. Since producing that task, we have progressed dramatically in our ability to produce a decent looking film opening.
In our prelim we basically only used one camera angle, and barely any edits, it looked stupidly bare compared to our film now.
04:00 has about 4 different video transitions, many different camera angles, sound effects, video effects, audio and track volume changing, time codes, more characters and locations, we linked and unlinked sound to video clips, we imported a soundtrack, we have camera movement.
Just by looking at this list, you can see how much we have learnt since doing the first task, if we were to do that task now, we would definitely be much more capable of making a decent looking preliminary task.
Of course, there are things about our final film opening that we would change, like the loop in the soundtrack, and the second scene at the beginning instead of the end.
Overall, my group and myself are really pleased with what we have accomplished and the progression from the preliminary task is exceptional.

Here is a link to Issy's blog, which has the full finished video and sound.

what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We have learnt that the technologies used to make films, are not as easy they look. Adobe Premiere Pro is the editing software we had to use, and though the first few times it was really difficult to get to grips with, we got used to it and it became more familiar with the features.

We also used cameras, which were relatively easy to function, and use but there was nearly always a problem with sound or people not knowing when to press record!

Making the soundtrack, I used mixcraft, which is a sound editing software, but unfortunately the ‘loop’ effect is really obvious and doesn’t sound great. The programme itself was extremely vague and confusing to use first time, but during the time I spent on it, I got more used to it and now I can use it well.

At the beginning of the project we didn’t realise that this project would take so much time and effort to produce, but generally, I think we have done well in the time we have had.
Unfortunately for us, the journey wasn’t so… simple. We had to have our project moved from one computer to another, and then the computer we were using almost always froze and crashed during our lessons.

how did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our audience by promoting the film opening on social networking sites e.g. Youtube and Twitter. This gives thousands of people the chance to watch the opening and get a feel for the film.
Within ten minutes of posting the link on twitter, we had one response asking if we had the whole film, and if they could see it.
This was a great thing to have because it meant people of our target audience were interested in the film we had made.
We posted links on twitter and facebook to tell our audience when and where the video would be posted to promote it to get the most feedback that we could.

who would be your audience for your media product?

We feel that our target audience would be for men and women our age (16 & 17) to the ages of around 24 and 25.
We have chosen these ages specifically because we feel as though these are the ages that would be most interested and attracted to this type of film. Generally, people this age are more into being scared, and having that build of tension and adrenaline buzz than say children and older people.

how does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents a range of social groups, for example, young blonde women. Young blondes are almost always portrayed as ‘dumb’, making wrong decisions and would care more about their appearance than surviving making them rather vulnerable. In some ways, we haven’t shown blonde women in this light, but we have shown them as more vulnerable than anything.

We represented young brunette women in a more conventional light; brassy, almost the protagonist of the film, the one who always survives. Brunettes are usually shown as the more exciting character in films, they nearly always have good instinct, and will follow them.

Young women in thriller films are shown as the most vulnerable ones, which is how we have also shown them, as they are captured and tortured.

As we have an ‘invisible’ character, it is still clear that ‘he’ is a stalker. He would come under the male category which automatically gives him power and dominance. Male characters are generally the stronger sex during films, and will be the more dominant character.

in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From previously analysing two thriller film openings, we had a rough idea of the forms and conventions that we were to follow or challenge.

Firstly, we followed the conventions by using a blonde and a brunette. In thriller films, it is likely that the blonde character will die and the brunette will survive, which is what we done in our film opening. It is clear that the blonde is in trouble because of how we have filmed and edited it, and the brunette character is shown right at the end of our opening to introduce her.
We also followed the conventions by using an ‘invisible’ stalker, even though he is not shown, but you know that someone is being watched by him. A film called ‘Firewall’ uses this same convention.
Flashbacks are quite common in thriller films, and we used them to begin our film. To portray the flashbacks, we converted them into black and white and made the outsides blurred to give the flashbacks more impact.
Using the security camera effect made the film look more thriller like, as it is a convention and is used in Firewall also.

Challenging the conventions, we used a song with lyrics, though our teachers weren’t sure whether it worked, we got feedback from other students who thought that the lyrics matched the feel of the film really well.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As our film is not a large budget film, it is more likely that an independent company such as ‘Metrodome’ would distribute our film. ‘Metrodome’ specialise in distributing low budget films, which ours would come under. As our film is low budget and cannot really be distributed by a large company, we could also use Youtube, Myspace and Facebook to build up a fan base around it. This could lead to bigger and better opportunities.

A film that is similar to ours is ‘Firewall’ which was distributed by Warner Bros.
Warner Bros is a company that distributes high budget films, which is why it wouldn’t distribute ours unless it had a massive following behind it.

I think that if we were to have access to better and more efficient equipment we would have opportunities to be distributed by bigger companies like Working Title. We can relate to other films which Metrodome distributed for like “Shifty” because we are also starting up and are new to the film business.

follow da conventions 'ventions 'ventions, challenge da stereotype!

a main thing in this project is to follow and challenge the conventions of a 'thriller' film.

we have followed the conventions by;

- using a blonde girl to begin with, the blondes nearly always die in horror and thriller films.
- we also have used becky, who is brunette, who will survive throughout the whole film.
- we have used a security camera, and flashbacks to portray a thriller-esque film opening.

we have challenged the conventions by;

- using music with lyrics in, because we feel the lyrics fit the male perspective of our film.
- we also used a zoom which is rarely used in film, but we felt that it felt and looked good.

when i first started this blog, we looked at the conventions of a thriller and horror film and i put them in a post, which you can find here.

deja vu.

once again, we've approached a problem in our editing - another group needing the computer at the same time as us. obviously, we don't mind giving up our time for another group to use the computer as we know they have the same deadline as us, but it proves difficult to get our jobs done when they do.
we have so much to do, and it's becoming quite a regular occurance that we have problems editing. last week, the computer malfunctioned, this week someone else needs the computer.

although we didnt have much time on the editing machine today, we did manage to check what we've done, edit some of the titles and try to change the music levels. also, we put the title in, even though we couldn't use the title we had originally wanted.

we had originally wanted to put a sound effect before the title so it looks better and more like the title of a film, but we couldn't do it ourselves as we don't know how. the music levels wouldn't change so thats what we're going to have to look at in our next lesson.

things that have worked well today are the dither additive effects on the end of the title because it links well with the security camera look we have gone for afterwards.
the security camera look is not unconventional for a thriller type film, it gives the feeling of being watched which is a common convention of a thriller film.

here is a link to our CIA productions post that Abbie has done.
CIA PRODUCTIONS.
abbie spent the lesson working on this, while me and Issy worked on the video.
we're very please with it, and it was good to be able to get two things done at once.

Friday 30 April 2010

the story so far..

issy is walking through fields, waiting for someone and being captured. all of these clips are placed randomly as to show that her thoughts are mixed up and it's almost as if her life is flashing before her eyes.
the last two clips of the flashbacks are almost as if it's showing that she's waking up as it gets faster, and it's quite distorted. the beginning clips are in the perspective of the person filming her, e.g, the man who kidnaps her.
she then wakes up after the distorted clips, and is shown in a room, the audience should see that she is being filmed by a CCTV camera which gives the feeling of knowing she's being watched by someone. the time in the clips jump, to show that time is going on and she's still in the same place. when the title pops up, (4am), it goes back to her being in the room, but she notices the camera and goes to see if it is actually there, a door slams, and she looks shocked and fears for her life as it is 4am.. which is why we called it that. she then shouts, and it cuts out to CIA films, which is the name of our production company.
we then got told to add more to it, so we went out and filmed a scene with becky and myself, to show that she is the next victim. we stuck to the conventions as becky is a brunette, and the brunette usually survives, whereas issy is a blonde and the blonde dies first. we feel that this scene establishes the fact that becky is the next victim, as we talk about her moving away to where we filmed issy walking in the fields.

we're generally happy with our storyline, though we think it may have been better if we had had the recently filmed scene at the beginning of the film instead of the end, but we're happy with how it's turned out.

so.. i don't get it. whys she doing this? whys she doing that?

this is the response, and questions, we've been getting quite a lot recently.
so the people that have watched it, don't really get it.

well done, thats the point!

it's the beginning of a film, we can't let you know EVERYTHING in the first two minutes otherwise there is no point in watching the film.
the flashbacks that start the film are there so people start to ask questions, for example, 'why is she there?'.

we put in our first brief that we wanted our audience to establish enigma codes. these questions that they're starting to ask are what we wanted to acheive because it means they're interested.

though what we have acheived is completely different to how myself and the group imagined it to be, we're all very proud of the work that we've put in.

i've been secretly falling apart..

for our film, we've used the 'aqualung' song 'strange and beautiful'. we think this song fits the creepiness of the film well, and though we know it is a copyrited song, we are desperate to use it.
the lyrics fit it so well, and it's as if it's being spoken in the voice of the man who the film is based around.

so, we do not own this song, or any rights to it.

crisis!

so, whilst editing today, our computer decided it was going to be annoying and malfunction, meaning we barely got any work done today, and the stuff we did do, we're not entirely sure if it saved.
while the computer is being sorted, i decided to make use of my time and edit my blog.

we've recently spent a lot of time editing, using adobe premiere pro to do so. it's an extremely infuriating experience, but we're getting through it and getting it done. our editing skills aren't the best, but we're generally really proud of what we have acheived so far.

with only a week til deadline, it's getting quite hectic. the fear of falling behind somewhat takes over, and it's difficult to concentrate, the fact our computer died during the editing process doesn't make it any less stressful, but it does give us some time to focus on our blog which we've been neglecting since starting editing. we don't have all that much more to do, we have to edit a few of the titles and make the transitions between them smoother and perfectly timed, we have to change the levels of the music as we had to import it again, we also have to import the title of the film as the photoshop TIFF file didn't work first time, though the production TIFF file worked, it wasn't perfect but it looked good and we kept it, we also need to get the video transitions smoother so it looks more like a film.
though that seems like we have a lot to do in a week, i feel like we will be able to acheive it if we put all our effort into doing so.

Tuesday 27 April 2010

alert: deadline approaching, deadline approaching!

as the deadline seems to get closer and closer, the panic starts to set in. we're not really near finished, well we were, until we got told to change this that and the other, so in this lesson (27th april 2010), myself and abbie changed the titles, and considered changing the music, as it apparently sounds as though it's a film trailer. this is something we were told quite recently, so it's frustrating to have to change it so near the deadline. we had a few people watch our opening, and they really liked it, so we're weary about whether to change it too much.
today we changed the timing and positioning of our titles, along with their colour and font, our teacher didn't feel as though the titles fitted with the genre originally, i'm not sure if they do now, but we've tried our best to stick to the conventions.
we looked at changing the music to our opening, but myself, abbie and issy feel that the song fits the genre and the opening to our film. so we're a bit funny about wanting to change it.
(obviously as it is 'strange and beautiful' by aqualung, we own no rights to it and do not take any credit.)

update:

as i haven't updated my blog in a while, i thought now would be the time.

unfortunately, it seemed that the footage we had filmed from the time before wouldn't edit into what we had already filmed, i wasn't in on the lesson that we found out, but abbie and issy told me when i got in later in the day. so we decided that we would film again in the next lesson we had and due to the fact the lighting was different in almost every shot we decided to just film the next part just all in one part and then just cut it up in the editing software.

also, since then we have filmed the bits we needed to refilm and i think it went quite well. we haven't been able to look at it yet though which is slightly annoying. we've also done the title to our film but we've used '04:00' instead of 4am, as 4am looks really odd in the fonts that are available to use!

in the next lesson we have, hopefully we'll be able to try and edit some more of the film together and we seem to be getting behind which isn't good!

Tuesday 16 March 2010

filming; round 3.

we filmed this time in the small interview room in the cabot eye, unfortunately, it wasn't dark like we wanted it to be, but that was no fault of our own as the lights are automatic.

editing;

i wasn't in for the lesson when abbie and issy edited, but when i came back the day after, i was really impressed with what they had acheived. the standard of the editing for people who haven't really done it before was really good and i was personally, very pleased with the outcome.
the first time we edited, we put together a few things and the computer crashed so we lost what we had done in that lesson. luckily, we remembered to save the rest of the time!

filming; round 2.

for this lesson, we went outside (down to magpie bottom nature reserve) to film the flashbacks for our film opening. we spent a lot of time out here getting the right shots, and laughing at the outtakes that occured. we managed to film the entire flashback section in just over two hours which was incredible considering the amount we had to cover!

to begin with, we filmed walking down the hill in magpie bottom that is just outside college, we then filmed through the trees, up a hill, into more trees - and screaming, and walking round a girl making the view look distorted.

the filming we did was fun, it also brought us a lot further in the project - which was good! it took us a long time to film, but it ended up really good and there are some things in it that we're really impressed with.

i am quite happy with the progress we made during this lesson as it enabled us to actually start on creating our film opening.

Friday 5 March 2010

beyond wonderland

so, we've decided that 'beyond wonderland is the best font we could find, and we're all very happy with out decision.
the only thing we need to find out now is whether we're going to use a digital clock time, or a '4am' format.

Photobucket
Photobucket

we will try and see what the majority of our target audience think.

fonts we're thinking of using

we've experimented with different versions of the title, like for instance, it as a digital clock time.
Photobucket
we've been looking for fonts that we find creepy and we think would suit our film. we've found these two so far, but we're still looking. we need to find a font that will catch the eye of our target audience and make them want to watch the film.

BRAINWAVE!

as i have a habit of waking up at 4am every morning, i was talking to issy about how annoying it is. i then realised that this could be put into our film. i then spoke to issy about these ideas, and she was like 'you genius!'.
from my annoyances, we've come up with a film title and a possible storyline.

film title;
4am.

storyline;
a girl is captured randomly, kept in a small room, and every morning at 4am (see! epic title!) the person who captured her will come into the little room and torture her in some form. the forms of torture will get worse and worse until eventually she is as unstable as he is. to end the film, the girl who has become somewhat crazy, will know that at this certain time, he will come for her and at this final time, she has had enough and attacks him. she leaves him for dead and manages to escape, but being in this environment has messed her up so much she runs to find someone to do exactly the same to. she takes this person back to the same house, and closes the door while the camera moves into her looking psychotically. the film will end with a horrific scream, and a blood spattering on the window and you won't know who's blood it is!

Thursday 4 March 2010

location and group.

locations we'll use;
magpie bottom (flashbacks)
interview rooms in cabot eye (the room in which she's captured)

group members and our jobs;
issy - actress
abbie - camera person
charley - director

also, we will have to find a few musical pieces so we can see which ones work with the filming we have done.

we will have to spend a lot of time editing the footage we have put together to make it the best it can be, so the quicker we get our filming done, the more time we have to edit and make it perfect.

Monday 1 March 2010

starting our filming.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
in this lesson, we started our filming. though we didn't get much filming done, it was good to have practice. we came across a few difficulties, for instance, the noise from the other students was hard to get around as we were filming where the noise was and the fact the lights are automatic and can't be turned off.
we started to go through our storyboard, and film the shots we felt we could film in this space. unfortunately, due to the lights being automatic, there is no way we can get the effect that we had originally wanted.

Thursday 25 February 2010

storyboarding.

storyboards of our opening.

since doing our storyboarding, a lot of the film that we had originally planned, didn't actually happen.
there are bits, as you can see, where we have followed the storyboard, and others where we haven't at all.

Friday 5 February 2010

ideas for our film.

our first idea would be to start the film using narration, the main character speaking. the camera would zoom into the characters face, and the eyes would open abruptly. the camera would follow the girl as she sat upright, and she would scream, the edit then cutting into a range of flashbacks of how she got to where she is. after each flashback, it'd show her again, showing her emotion and confusion. this will hopefully create some enigma codes for the audience. the narration carries on throughout the 2 minutes of filming.

we would have a secondary idea, but as we planned these ages ago, we have set ourselves to do this one. it is just a rough outline on what we want to do, so there will probably be variations on the ideas, as they are just a frame.

Thursday 4 February 2010

what my intentions are...

through my analysis i understand the conventions of the opening to a thriller movie to be the building of suspense and tension. it should leave you with many enigma codes in your head, just itching to be answered! many people we asked said that they would expect something strange that establishes the main character to start the film. they also said that they would rather the film start with something significant instead of it being dragged out, which is challenging the conventions of a thriller film. the two films i analysed show that the convention of a thriller film is to drag out the opening so that nothing happens.

through my target audience research i have found that our target audience are between the ages of 15 - 24, but the range we asked and replied went from 10 - 28 year olds.

therefore i plan to meet the conventions of a thriller by using the beginning to create tension and build suspense. we will not give much away about the film's storyline in the beginning but give enough to make the audience start asking questions.

however, i plan to challenge the conventions by not dragging out the beginning of the film, and using narration over the visual.

Tuesday 26 January 2010

what i found from my questionnaire.

What age are you?
- 10/14 (2)
- 15/19 (14)
- 20/24 (4)
- 24/28 (3)
- 28 + (0)

Are you male or female?
- male (1)
- female (23)

Are you employed, self employed or unemployed?
- employed (7)
- self employed (0)
- unemployed (17)

How often do you go to the cinema?
- once a week (3)
- twice a week (0)
- once a month (12)
- not very often (8)

What type of film would you usually go and see?
- horror (4)
- comedy (18)
- thriller (2)
- chick flick (6)
- action (1)
- fantasy (0)

Do you like thriller films?
- yes (11)
- no (4)
- they're alright (8)

Do you like the films to start slowly, or would you rather it start with a bang?
- slowly (8)
- start with a bang (10)
- other (5)

What would you expect to see in the opening 2 minutes of a thriller film?
- not a lot (1)
- something strange, but establishes the main character (15)
- something that makes you jump (4)
- a lot of dialogue (0)
- not much dialogue (3)

Anything else you'd like to add about what you like about thriller films?
- it depends what you class as thriller I guess... I don't like things that make me jump, I think of that more in horror films... if films like Speed are classed as thrillers then I like the tension of wondering if things are going to go badly or if it will all be fixed in the last minute.

- more in relation to the last question, i'd expect there to be something of a sort of mystery to happen, that is basically what the plot goes down to solving. i don't really watch that many thriller films, but when i do i like to have to guess what's really happening, rather than it all just being laid out on a plate from the start.

- the twist at the end. i think a good thriller knows how to create an ending no one would suspect, leaving the audience wanting more.

- they should star johnny depp. that's a helpful answer, right? yeah thought so.

- i think it depends on your definition of a "thriller." i'm not very fond of movies that always have something jumping out at you to make you jump. i think it's because it gets me every time. i also don't really like blood and gore, so horror movies are not really my favorite genre. i don't mind movies that are just suspenseful, those can actually be quite good.

- an awesome twist.
